Chapter 226: Night Talk in the Forest
Chapter 226: Night Talk in the Forest
As night fell, the woods were enveloped in a dense darkness. After a day of traveling and fierce fighting, the team finally settled in a hidden cave. The entrance was camouflaged with branches, and the fire inside was dim, but it brought a hint of warmth.
"Sister-in-law, you've worked so hard today." Zhang Qiang handed Cheng Yuwei a bowl of freshly cooked vegetable soup and looked at her with admiration. "Without you, we really don't know what we would do."
Cheng Yuwei took the bowl, blew away the steam, and said with a smile, "It's not that exaggerated. The real danger is when you break out with the food and supplies. It's good that you can come back safely."
Li Chao leaned against the stone wall, rubbing his scraped ankle. He said, "Sister-in-law, the trap you designed this time was truly brilliant. You fooled the enemies around like crazy. The expressions on their faces looked like they'd eaten bitter melons."
The other team members couldn't help but laugh after hearing this, and the tense atmosphere finally eased a little.
"Don't be too complacent. The enemy was able to react in such a short time, which shows that they are not simple people." Cheng Yuwei took a sip of hot soup, her tone still calm, "We must be more careful in the next few days."
Zhang Qiang nodded, his eyes filled with respect. He couldn't help but ask, "Sister-in-law, I heard you used to be a university professor, but how come you know so much about tactics?"
Past events emerge
Cheng Yuwei was stunned and silent for a moment. She put down the bowl and said slowly, "The professor is right, but the field I previously studied is related to chemistry and engineering. These tactics are not something that came out of thin air."
She raised her head, her gaze seeming to pierce through the flames before her and settle on something further away. "In modern warfare, material supply and terrain utilization are the core of strategy. You may not know this, but I've participated in some scientific research projects before. Although I wasn't directly involved in combat, many of my tactical theories were summarized from practical experience."
"So that's how it is!" Li Chao suddenly realized, "Sister-in-law, I've never even heard of those things you're talking about, but they work as soon as I use them."
"So, knowledge really can change your destiny." Cheng Yuwei laughed at herself, "I just didn't expect that this knowledge would come in handy in a situation like this."
Zhang Qiang pondered for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Sister-in-law, have you ever thought about returning to your original life?"
As soon as the words fell, the cave suddenly became quiet, with only the crackling of the flames.
Cheng Yuwei lowered her eyes and did not answer immediately.
Choice of Belief
"Sometimes I think," she finally spoke in a low voice, "if I hadn't traveled here, I would still be busy in the lab, occasionally teaching classes, and working on publishing articles. That's the world I'm familiar with."
She raised her head, her eyes becoming firm. "But since fate has brought me here, I must do everything in my power to change something. How can I stand by and watch you fight for survival and victory, even at the cost of your own lives?"
After hearing these words, the team members couldn't help but feel their blood boiling.
"Sister-in-law, you're right!" Li Chao said excitedly, "Although we're in a difficult situation now, as long as we unite as one, we will be able to achieve victory one day!"
"Yes, we will definitely win!" Zhang Qiang also clenched his fists.
Cheng Yuwei smiled slightly, but sighed silently in her heart. This belief was something she had to stick to, but the cruelty of reality could not be ignored.
Late-night crisis
As the night deepened, everyone took turns to rest. Cheng Yuwei leaned against the stone wall, closing her eyes to rest, when she suddenly felt a strange chill. She opened her eyes, pricked up her ears, and listened carefully.
"What's wrong, sister-in-law?" Zhang Qiang asked in a low voice when he saw this.
"Shh!" Cheng Yuwei made a hushed gesture, signaling him not to make a sound.
In the distant woods, there was a faint rustling sound, as if someone was approaching.
"Something's happening!" Cheng Yuwei whispered, "Everyone be careful."
The team members immediately entered combat mode, extinguished the fire, and dispersed to ambush around the cave entrance.
The sound was getting closer and closer, and one could almost hear the sound of dead leaves being crushed. Suddenly, a dark shadow flashed past the cave entrance!
"Enemy?" Li Chao clenched his gun, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
"Not sure." Cheng Yuwei's eyes were calm. "Maybe they were scouts exploring the way."
The shadow moved quickly, seemingly scouting around. Cheng Yuwei's heart moved, and she signaled everyone not to act rashly.
At this moment, a stone at Zhang Qiang's feet suddenly slid, making a slight sound. The black shadow suddenly stopped and looked towards the cave entrance!
The team members held their breath and there was dead silence in the cave.
The black shadow stood there for a few seconds, seemed to find nothing unusual, and turned and left.
"Sister-in-law, do you want to take action?" Zhang Qiang asked in a low voice.
"No rush." Cheng Yuwei shook her head. "He's alone, most likely exploring the way. If we reveal our position now, the enemy will immediately surround us."
Zhang Qiang nodded, suppressed his impulse, and hid in the shadows with the other team members.
Unflappable
After more than ten minutes, the noise outside finally died down, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Sister-in-law, that guy must be an enemy spy." Li Chao whispered, "They may find this place soon."
"That's right, so we must move as soon as possible." Cheng Yuwei stood up and said calmly, "Evacuate quickly before their main force arrives."
Zhang Qiang hesitated a bit: "But this place is already hidden enough. Changing places may not be safer."
"The enemy has locked onto this area. We can't risk staying here." Cheng Yuwei ordered decisively, "Everyone pack up and leave in five minutes."
The team members acted quickly, covering the fire and gathering their belongings. Cheng Yuwei carefully checked every corner to ensure that no trace of anything was left.
set off
Five minutes later, the team quietly left the cave under the moonlight and headed deeper into the forest.
Cheng Yuwei walked at the front of the team, holding the map tightly in her hand, her eyes determined. Although the road ahead was still dangerous, she knew in her heart that as long as they were alive, there was still hope.
