Berserk: The Prophet

Chapter 168 Ambush

Chapter 168 Ambush

The battle on the city wall intensified. The elite troops of the Serpent Worship Cult surged onto the wall with unstoppable momentum. Their attacks were fierce and merciless. Although the defending soldiers fought desperately, their numbers were dwindling and the defense line was gradually breaking down.

Soon, the situation escalated into street fighting, buying time for the elderly, women, and children to escape, and also giving able-bodied men a chance to take up arms and defend themselves.

Young Aleris could only watch helplessly as his people scattered and fled from the fortress, some of whom were killed or violated by the soldiers of the Serpent Cult before they could escape.

"No...no!" "Mommy...Mommy..." The cries of the woman and child, along with the cruel and barbaric scene, pierced Aleris deeply.

"Bring me a longbow!!" The furious Aleris immediately demanded a 1.8-meter-long yew wood longbow from his lieutenant. Its heavy weight indicated that the person who could draw this bow must have strong arms.

Aleris drew his bowstring and aimed at a Serpent Worshipper who was harassing a woman. He took a deep breath, released the bowstring, and the arrow flew like lightning towards the target, piercing the enemy's skull and killing him instantly.

Seeing this, the other soldiers followed Aleris's example, firing longbows or crossbows at the enemy. Arrows rained down, forcing the Serpent Cult soldiers to temporarily halt their pursuit and seek cover.

However, this was only a brief respite. Aleris knew they had to find an effective defensive strategy as soon as possible and buy as much time as possible, or the entire fortress would fall.

Reinforcements... I just hope they arrive in time.

Aleris kept his eyes fixed on the enemy lines in the distance, contemplating his next move. He realized that simple archery could not hold off the enemy's attack for long; he needed to find a way to create more obstacles.

He turned to the soldiers beside him and shouted, "We need to set up roadblocks! Collect wooden crates, tables, chairs, and other items from the city and pile them up in the streets to stop the enemy's advance!" The soldiers responded immediately and sprang into action.

Meanwhile, Alessi organized a small, elite squad of soldiers to carry out harassment operations behind enemy lines. They stealthily circled around to the enemy's flanks, using houses and alleyways to conduct guerrilla attacks and disrupt the enemy's rhythm.

A tense atmosphere filled the air. Everyone understood that the outcome of this battle depended on whether they could hold out until reinforcements arrived. Aleris silently prayed that they could defend this last fortress and protect the city's inhabitants from displacement.

......

outside the city.

Barkley's allied forces finally approached Sunrise Harbor, and the smoke and gunfire in the sky spurred them to quicken their pace.

On the vast plains of Barkley, the Allied forces marched like a winding dragon, passing through dense forests and heading straight for Sunshine Harbor.

As the leader of the allied forces, Isole ordered the cavalry troops of the allied forces to go to the battlefield as the vanguard. Although Trunks was worried about the dense forest road, it seemed that the situation in Radiant Harbor was more critical at the moment.

"We mustn't be rash," Trunks thought, sensing that the Serpent Cult would surely have set up ambushes on both sides of the jungle.

Trunks led his cavalry retinue at a distance behind the Allied forces. He decided to send out a scout team to explore the road ahead.

He selected some agile cavalrymen as scouts, who cautiously infiltrated the forest. Soon, the scouts returned with news: "Sir, there's an ambush ahead!" a scout's voice was urgent and low.

Just as he had expected, the Serpent Worshippers had set traps and ambushes along both sides of the road.

As the road gradually narrowed, it was clearly too late to send a message to Isole, who was far ahead. Trunks made a decisive move, leading his cavalry to change course, attempting to bypass the dangerous area, while sending a message to the infantry regiment behind him that they were ready to provide support at any time.

Trunks led his troops along a more winding path, crossing a shallow river along the way, and, guided by scouts ahead, continued along a clear road.

......

The arrival of Barkley's scouts made the Viper Tyrant Bugita, who was lying in ambush in the forest, slightly uneasy, even though his Shadow Walkers had already taken out most of the scouts.

"Hiss... Don't be so tense, Bougita, the enemy is here." The Cobra Tyrant Desaro flicked his tongue, his voice low and hoarse. His tongue was licking his sharp teeth, and the sound of horses' hooves in the distance had already caused the small stones on the ground to tremble slightly.

Boogita took a deep breath and steadied himself. He knew the real battle was about to begin.

As the sound of hooves drew closer, Desaro prepared for battle. His body swelled, and his eyes gleamed with ferocity.

Finally, the vanguard of the allied forces came into view, clearly unaware of the threat lurking in the shadows.

The Serpent Cult's ambush troops moved silently through the forest, their eyes filled with murderous intent, as the allied cavalry were about to enter their ambush.

"Ready!" Bugita's voice echoed through the forest as his fingers gripped the bowstring tightly until Barkley's forces were completely encircled.

"Loose the arrows!!" In an instant, flying axes and arrows rained down from the forest towards the allied forces. The allied cavalry were caught off guard by the sudden attack and were thrown into chaos. Many soldiers were struck down by flying weapons before they could even react, and their warhorses reared up and neighed in terror. In an instant, men and horses fell to the ground.

"Attack!!" At that moment, Desalo gave the order, and the Viper Archers and Cobra Knights mounted their horses and charged towards the allied forces.

As the Serpent Worshipers finished throwing their poisoned weapons, battle erupted in the forest, with the Serpent Worshipers' ambush troops and the allied cavalry engaging in fierce combat. Swords flashed continuously through the trees as soldiers from both sides fought a life-or-death struggle in this confined space.

Caught off guard, the Allied soldiers fought in disarray, failing to form any coherent formations or launch any counterattacks, resulting in low morale.

In the chaos, Salad Velivendu from Rose Castle quickly stepped forward. He brandished his longsword, shouted orders, and rallied the surrounding soldiers in an attempt to regain their strength.

"Brothers, don't panic! Keep formation!" His shouts echoed across the battlefield, and some soldiers began to respond to his call, gathering together to form a defensive line.

Salad took the lead, charging into the enemy ranks and wielding his greatsword to cut down several elite members of the Serpent Cult. Inspired by him, the other soldiers followed suit and charged forward.

Gradually, the morale of the allied forces began to rise, and they engaged in a tough tug-of-war with the ambush troops of the Serpent Worship Cult.
