Chapter 38 Idiot
Chapter 38 Idiot
"So, what do you think?"
"Wait, the gods have given us plenty of time, and we don't know enough about the enemy. Let the two mad beasts fight first. Once we've figured out what they're fighting over, and once they're exhausted from tearing each other apart and unable to fight back, then we'll strike."
"I'm afraid I'll miss the opportunity, so let me go and find out what's going on first."
"You?" Chang looked Xin Zang up and down and joked, "You're the kid who can get lost even as a scout, and now you're going to infiltrate the enemy camp like a real soldier."
"Please don't laugh at me. Getting lost in the desert is the arrangement of the gods."
"Has it been dangerous these past few days?" Changye stopped joking and changed the subject.
"There were several times when I thought I was going to die, but thanks to God, the trip was very fruitful."
"Including that woman from another race?"
"That was an accident, I..."
Xin Zang didn't know how to say it.
His mind now contains knowledge and skills about the rise and fall of city-states, he is skilled in all kinds of crafts, and he has a rough understanding of the wisdom of a civilization spanning thousands of years.
Yet, he couldn't find a single suitable word to explain a drow elf to the leader.
Xin Zang never bothered to learn about Lis, didn't know her purpose, or her past.
He had thought they could maintain this ambiguous relationship until they parted ways.
But she's become attached to him, and their relationship will likely remain entangled for the foreseeable future...
"Don't be nervous, I'm not interrogating a hero." Chang noticed his embarrassment. "Just take it as a reminder from an elder: she's dangerous."
"She can't hurt me, and as long as I keep an eye on her, she can't hurt anyone in the camp either."
"Danger isn't just about knives and guns; many things are more terrifying than knives and guns."
Chang tapped his chest with his rough fingers, looked at him, and said, "You know what I'm talking about."
In the silence, the tent flap was lifted, and a gust of cold wind carrying snowflakes rushed in.
"Looks like I've come at the wrong time, interrupting your family meeting?"
Liz leaned against the door, a half-smile on her face.
Chang did not speak again.
He glanced at Xin Zang, picked up the heavy iron greatsword, and walked straight out of the tent.
As a leader, he has done what he was supposed to do.
What remains is the trouble that this young man, chosen by God and the future king, needs to deal with.
Perhaps this is also part of the gods' test? Chang thought belatedly.
After he left, only the two of them remained in the small space.
"How long did you listen outside?" Shinzo asked.
"It started with that line, 'She's dangerous,'" Liz readily admitted. "I heard everything that followed."
The fire in the heart brought feedback.
That's the truth.
Before Xin Zang could speak, a petite figure suddenly pressed against him.
It was almost an instinctive defensive reaction.
A faint layer of Buddha's light appeared on Xinzang's body, and the scorching "heart fire" instantly burst forth from his body.
"hiss--"
Liz recoiled as if she'd been electrocuted, her fingertips burning red.
"So guarded? I just wanted to hug you." She rubbed her fingers, pouted as if she was about to burst into tears.
She looked so pitiful that if someone who didn't know her personality saw her, they would really think she was a helpless woman.
However, Shinzo was an exception. He had seen how Ries killed people, so he wouldn't be fooled by this scene.
Liz also found it boring, so she stopped her fake tears and casually found a leather cushion to sit down.
"Hey, hey, you don't really think I'm dangerous, do you?"
Liz rested her chin on her hand, her tone slightly mocking, "Are all humans like this? My mother once told a story. A high and mighty princess was captivated by a vagrant, and in the end, she abandoned all her wealth and status, leaving the kingdom with him."
Shinzo was somewhat exasperated and retorted, "Do you think I'm that princess?"
"No."
"You're a wolf disguised as a human. You always think that to prove your loyalty to your pack, you have to eat someone..."
She paused after speaking, a slight smile playing on her lips. "Or is this just your true nature?"
Liz laughed and lay down, her hands behind her head. The firelight outside shone on her face, and her eyes shone with an indescribable light.
Her silver-white hair was spread out on the blanket, and Xin Zang couldn't see her expression.
"That big guy doesn't understand you. He's afraid you'll hesitate, that you'll betray your people because of me." Seeing that Xin Zang remained silent, Liz continued, "But we all know it's all fake."
"Don't do this, I don't want to kill you." Xin Zang glanced at her.
"I don't want to be killed by you either." Liz patted the soft blanket beneath her. "Why don't you lie down for a while, big boy? This is much more comfortable than the broken stone slabs in the dungeon."
Xin Zang ignored her.
He walked to the side and pulled out several pieces of ironware captured from the battlefield.
A crimson [Heartfire] ignited in his palm, directly enveloping the cold metal. The pig iron rapidly softened and fused under the high temperature, shaping itself into the form the warrior needed.
He needed to forge a battle axe for himself before nightfall to prepare for the potential risks.
Liz didn't say anything more.
The drow elf seemed to remember something, and quietly lay on her side on the blanket, propping her head up with one hand, her gaze fixed on the man forging blacksmith in the firelight.
After a long while, she finally smiled and said something, though it was unclear who she was talking to.
"How stupid."
