Chapter 331
Chapter 331
Ye Weiwan looked up and saw Rong Yu and Ji Mohan. She remembered that last time in Haicheng, she didn’t even have an invitation but still sneaked into the Ji family’s cruise banquet.
She quickly explained, “Miss Rong, Third Master Ji, I really did receive an invitation this time. I happened to meet Madam Sheng by accident, and she warmly invited me. I couldn’t refuse, so I agreed to come along and join in the fun.”
“So you’re Miss Ye.” Sheng Ciyuan shook hands with Ye Weiwan and formally introduced, “Half a month ago, my mother’s car drove into the river. It so happened that Miss Ye was passing by. Without regard for her own safety, she jumped into the river and pulled my mother out of the car. By then, my mother had already lost consciousness. If it weren’t for Miss Ye, my mother might have…”
Ye Weiwan smiled sheepishly. “It was nothing, just a small effort. No need to thank me too much.”
Sheng Ciyuan looked at her with great admiration.
This girl had left immediately after saving his mother. Later, when they reviewed the surveillance footage, it took all the Sheng family’s connections to find out who she was.
He had gone to her home personally to thank her, but she wasn’t there.
Later, his father went there again and brought thank-you gifts, but Ye Weiwan returned them all untouched.
To her, it was simply about saving a life—she didn’t want anything in return.
Sheng Ciyuan said, “Don’t just stand at the door chatting. Let’s go inside.”
Ji Mohan walked up to Ye Weiwan and gave her a thumbs-up. “Miss Ye’s character is truly admirable.”
“I’ve saved at least twenty or so people who fell into water, most of them children,” Ye Weiwan said with a frown. “Especially in the summer—lots of kids go swimming together in the river with no adults around. The accident rate is as high as seventy percent. Schools and society really need to do more water-safety education…”
Ji Mohan nodded in agreement.
He paused, then asked curiously, “I saw you talking to Lu Jiaojiao just now. Do you know each other?”
Ye Weiwan’s voice grew a little colder. “She and I were college classmates.”
“College classmates?” Ji Mohan said in surprise. “Are you also a graduate of Tsinghua?”
Ye Weiwan looked up at him. “Are you, too?”
More and more guests arrived at the Sheng residence, and their conversation deepened.
Rong Yu and the old man were led by Sheng Ciyuan into the living room.
As soon as she walked in, Old Madam Sheng stood up and firmly clasped Rong Yu’s hand. “Miss Rong, the Sheng residence isn’t far from Tsinghua University. Do come visit us when you have time…”
Madam Sheng, Xu Lu, laughed and said, “That’s right, Miss Rong. Old Madam talks about you all the time.”
“Xiao Yu has just started university and is very busy,” Old Master Ji said, changing the subject lightly. “Speaking of which, I heard Madam Sheng was in a car accident recently. How are you feeling these days?”
“Just a bit shaken, nothing serious,” Xu Lu sighed. “But it’s a pity—I had gone to the An family that day to pick something up. Because of the accident, a set of bridal headpieces and jewelry that the An family had passed down since the Qing dynasty was completely crushed. They’re beyond repair. Still, An Nuo didn’t seem to mind.”
Rong Yu asked curiously, “Why did Madam Sheng have to go get the items personally?”
Xu Lu was about to answer.
Suddenly, the courtyard echoed with the sound of gongs and drums.
Old Madam Sheng stood up with her cane. “The bridal party is back! Let’s go to the banquet hall!”
Sheng Ciyuan quickly helped the old lady, and the group walked toward the front courtyard.
A line of wedding cars stopped at the entrance of the Sheng family’s courtyard house. Sheng Yun was the first to step out, wearing a dark red Mandarin suit tailored by hand from an Italian master—a design that preserved the charm of traditional Chinese formalwear while incorporating the clean lines of modern tailoring.
He bent down and carefully helped Anuo out of the car. She was also dressed in a completely handmade Chinese-style wedding gown. The Suzhou embroidery of a phoenix on her skirt seemed ready to take flight with every step, and the pearls and gold ornaments on her headdress complemented each other brilliantly.
Holding Anuo’s hand, Sheng Yun walked down the red carpet and entered the courtyard surrounded by a crowd of guests.
“First bow to Heaven and Earth!”
“Second bow to parents!”
Sheng’s elderly grandmother accepted the tea and suddenly burst into tears.
This youngest son of hers had worried her to no end. He hadn’t studied well as a child, couldn’t hold down a job as an adult, lazed around even during his time in the military, and his love life was a complete mess. By his mid-thirties, he still had no plans to settle down.
She had once thought she might never live to see her youngest son get married.
But unexpectedly, the day had come so soon—and he had married such an outstanding wife.
After the wedding ceremony, the banquet began.
Sheng Yun took Anuo around to toast each table of guests, introducing her to every member of the Sheng family.
Rong Yu was pulled over by Sheng’s grandmother to sit beside her.
Anuo smiled and said, “Miss Rong, we seem to have met before at Base Four, remember?”
“Of course I remember.” Rong Yu raised her glass. “Wishing you a happy marriage.”
Sheng Yun laughed heartily. “Miss Rong, please enjoy the feast. Don’t rush off when the banquet ends—Qingyan will be back later, so you two can meet up.”
Grandpa Ji curled his lips. “We’ve got things to do later…”
Anuo pulled Sheng Yun aside and asked in a low voice, “What’s the relationship between Miss Rong and Qingyan?”
“What else could it be between a man and a woman?” Sheng Yun took her hand. “Come on, let’s keep toasting. This table is for guests on my grandmother’s side…”
After the toasts, Anuo went to change into another gown.
As she passed the Sheng family study, she suddenly paused. Inside the study, Sheng Dian was chatting with a few military and political officials. These high-ranking figures casually exchanged remarks, each one revealing information far beyond what ordinary people could ever access.
Anuo stood at the doorway for about five or six minutes before heading to the bridal chamber.
She wasn’t in a hurry to change clothes. Instead, she pulled out her phone and made a call, chatting for four full minutes before hanging up.
Standing by the window lost in thought, she suddenly heard a noise from outside.
Pulling back the curtain, she saw an elderly man crouched by the wall, feeding a fat cat a fish as long as an arm. The cat had already eaten more than half of it. She had no idea how long the old man had been there.
“Anuo! Are you ready yet?”
A knock at the door came with Sheng Yun’s impatient calls.
Flustered, she changed clothes in a hurry and returned to the banquet with Sheng Yun.
In the Sheng family courtyard, Grandpa Ji was still feeding the cat. The cat was incredibly fat—he could barely lift it. A fish that big would be plenty for a person to eat, yet this cat could devour it in one meal.
Suddenly, he missed Pinecone.
“Mr. Ji, what are you doing out here?” The Sheng family butler came looking for him. “There’s fine tea prepared in the tearoom—shall I take you there?”
Grandpa Ji didn’t refuse and followed him.
The banquet lasted until three in the afternoon. Rong Yu had planned to stay a little longer to wait for Sheng Qingyan.
But when she looked, her younger son was slouched on the sofa, looking exhausted and fast asleep.
She walked over and said softly, “Yingbao, wake up. Let’s go home to sleep…”
Old Master Ji rubbed his eyes and glanced outside. The sun was still blazing. He muttered, “Aren’t we waiting for Sheng Qingyan?”
“No need to wait,” Rong Yu said. “When he’s done with his work, he’ll come find me on his own.”
Old Madam Sheng tried to persuade them to stay, but seeing how utterly worn out Old Master Ji was, she had no choice but to let it go and asked the family head, Sheng Dian, to personally see them out.
As soon as they got into the car, Old Master Ji leaned against Rong Yu’s shoulder and fell asleep.
